Christine (Five Days)

My guts knot around the sharp ball of pain, and I double over gasping. It feels like a bomb went off in my head. I can’t breathe. Mouth dry, tongue swollen, squeezing my arms around my middle. This isn’t real. Stricken, I turn and look at Aurora. A crick in my neck painfully protests the motion.

Aurora is pale. Her eyes glistening, her mouth a tight line. She stares at Addison. I force myself to look too. Addison is a blurry outline, barely more than a gray blob. I try to breathe. Lung burning, empty and desperate. My mouth moves, and I feel like a fish out of water. All this air around me, but I can’t use any of it.

This is a nightmare. Wake up. Wake up, you stupid, stupid girl.

A dream. Right. This is a bad dream. My throat opens and air squeaks into my lungs at last. I straighten, pressing my hands hard onto my thighs. Another breath, close my eyes and open them, but the scene doesn’t change. I’m still stuck in this nightmare.

“Five, maybe six days,” Addison says.

I think she said more, but I didn’t hear it. Five days. What does that mean? No. It doesn’t matter, because this is a bad dream. All I have to do is wake up and then it will be over. Nothing she says will matter, because then I’ll see it for what it is. A sick trick of my unconscious mind.

Moving my left hand to my right arm, I pinch myself. It hurts, but not enough because I don’t wake up. I shift my grip and dig my nails in to my forearm. Addison comes into focus but doesn’t disappear. I don’t wake up.

“No,” I say, shaking my head.

Wet tears streaming, salty on my lips. Addison says more words, but they run together and don’t make sense. I stop digging my nails into my arm. Desperation rising, I do the only thing I can think of. I slap my face.

Smack! Smack! Smack!

“Christy, stop,” Aurora exclaims, grabbing my arm.

I try to fight her, but she’s too real. I’m real. The stinging of my face and the sharp pain in my forearm where my nails drew blood leave no room for doubts.

“It’s not a bad dream,” I sob.

Aurora pulls me into an embrace, and once more I’m broken and sobbing in her arms.

“No, it’s not,” she says calmly, holding me tight. “There has to be something we can do, Addison. Anything.”

Her words become a rock in the raging storm of emotions and negative thoughts. Do. Something. Anything.

Yes. Yes!

I straighten and rub my sleeve over my eyes to clear the tears. Addison comes into focus, and I’m a bit stunned. She looks like shit. She rubs her hands on her face, then pushes her hair back from her face. She shakes her head.

“No,” she says. “I need that machine from the City. No one can go outside the bunker. I don’t see where there’s anything we can do.”

“We can go outside if we have the right equipment,” Aurora says.
